BJJ drop-in checklist for travelers

If you already train, a trip drop-in is mostly kit, a waiver, and reading the gym’s visitor rules — not shopping for a membership. This checklist is what to pack and verify before you go. Definitions and etiquette live in the drop-ins and open mats guide. Class vs open mat is a separate policy split.

Kit

Pack a clean gi, no-gi, or both. Match the session: OpenMapp uses the gym’s class names and whether we marked the session gi, no-gi, or open mat. City filters exist for both — for example Austin gi and Austin no-gi. If you only have one kit, pick a session labeled for it.

Waiver and contact-first gyms

Expect a waiver. Many gyms also want you on a first-visit form or an app before you step on the mat. If the card says contact the gym before dropping in, message first — for taught classes and open mat. Unknown contact status means ask, not assume walk-in.

Payment

Visitors usually pay a day pass or per-class fee. OpenMapp only shows a price when it was listed as a visitor drop-in or day pass — not trials or memberships. If the card says unknown, we do not guess. Courtesy rates for affiliates or travelers are the gym’s call.

Before you leave the hotel

  1. Open the city drop-ins filter if you need a taught class, or the open-mat page if you need rounds — then read the card.
  2. Confirm gi vs no-gi on the session you picked.
  3. If the card says contact first, send the message and wait for a yes.
  4. If visitor status is unknown, treat it as “ask the gym,” not as welcome.
  5. Same-day workflow — map, filter, verify — is in train the day you land.

FAQ

What should I bring to a BJJ drop-in?
Bring a clean gi, no-gi kit, or both so you can match the session. Expect a waiver and, at many gyms, a first-visit form or app signup. If OpenMapp says to contact the gym first, message before you go. Payment is listed on the gym card where we have a visitor drop-in or day-pass price — we do not invent fees.
Do I need a gi for a drop-in?
Only if that session is gi. A no-gi class is not a substitute for a gi class, and the reverse. OpenMapp city pages have gi and no-gi filters. If you only packed one kit, pick a session labeled for that kit.
Do I have to message a gym before dropping in?
Often yes. Many gyms want a waiver, form, or a message first. If the gym card says contact before dropping in, do that for class visits and open mat. Showing up unannounced when they asked for a message is the fastest way to get turned away.

Pack to match the session, read the card, contact when asked. Unknown stays unknown.
