BJJ Drop-Ins and Open Mats: How to Find a Place to Train

If you already train somewhere, traveling or trying a new gym usually means a drop-in. OpenMapp is built around that: which gyms say visitors are welcome, what a day pass costs when we have it, and when class or open mat is listed. The map covers the contiguous United States; city coverage is still being filled in.

What a drop-in is

A drop-in is paying (or being invited) to train at a gym that is not your home academy, usually for one class or one day. It is not a membership. Some gyms want a message or form first. Some take walk-ins. OpenMapp records that as drop-ins welcome, not welcome, or unknown — we do not guess.

What an open mat is

Open mat is rolling time with little or no formal instruction. People pair up, drill, or spar. The gym still sets the rules: gi or no-gi, time window, and who may attend. On OpenMapp, a class is an open mat when the gym lists it that way, not because the name sounds similar to something else.

Policy split: class vs open mat

Class visitor rules and open-mat visitor rules are often different. OpenMapp stores them as two fields. For how to choose on trip day, and Austin as a worked example, see open mat vs class drop-in.

Visitor etiquette

Do visitors usually pay?

Usually yes: a day pass or per-class fee. Affiliates and travelers sometimes get a courtesy rate; that is the gym’s call, not something OpenMapp invents. We only show a price when it was listed as a visitor drop-in or day pass — not free trials or monthly memberships.

Waivers and registration

Expect a waiver. Many gyms also want you on a first-visit form or an app before you step on the mat. If OpenMapp notes that you should contact them first, do that. Showing up unannounced when they asked for a message is the fastest way to get turned away.

Gi vs No-Gi

Bring both if you can. The timetable on OpenMapp uses the gym’s class names and whether we marked the session as gi, no-gi, or open mat. A no-gi class is not a substitute for a gi class, and the reverse. If you only have one kit, pick a session that matches it.

How OpenMapp helps

The map defaults to gyms that are open to class drop-ins. City and market pages list those gyms with addresses, listed prices, and today’s classes when a timetable exists. Unknown stays unknown. If a listing is wrong, use Suggest on the gym card.

FAQ

How do I find a BJJ drop-in while traveling in the US?
Open OpenMapp, search the city, and use the drop-ins filter for gyms marked welcome for class visitors. Use city open-mat pages for rolling times on verified grids, then read each card. Unknown visitor status is omitted from the drop-ins filter rather than guessed. Coverage is the contiguous United States; city pages are still being filled in.
Do I need a gi for a drop-in?
Only if that session is gi. Bring both kits if you can. OpenMapp labels sessions from the gym’s class names as gi, no-gi, or open mat. A no-gi class is not a substitute for a gi class.
How much is a BJJ drop-in?
Usually a day pass or per-class fee, but the amount is the gym’s. OpenMapp only shows a price when it was listed as a visitor drop-in or day pass — not trials or memberships. If the card says unknown, we do not invent a number. Courtesy rates for affiliates or travelers are the gym’s call.
What etiquette should visitors follow?
Arrive early, introduce yourself at the desk, and ask which class or mat you are joining. Wear a clean kit that matches the session. Tap early and skip hero rolling with people you do not know. If the gym asks you to sit out of sparring until they know you, that is normal.
Does OpenMapp cover Hawaii or Alaska?
No. The catalog is the contiguous United States (lower 48). We do not list gyms in Alaska or Hawaii.
What should I use a gym page for on a one-day visit?
Today’s listed classes if a timetable exists, gi vs no-gi, class drop-in and open-mat visitor notes, whether to contact first, and a day-pass price only where we have one. The address and map pin get you there. Unknown stays unknown.
